Kerikeri Basin

There is a wonderful variety of things to see and do, in and around Kerikeri, which encompass everything from the scenic and picturesque to the cultural and historical.

And then, of course, there is the wider Bay of Islands, with all it’s superb marine attractions, for which it has become justly famous.

Historic Kororipo Pa Basin
Kerikeri is known as the ‘Cradle of the Nation’ as it was the first European settlement in New Zealand.
Historic buildings, in a beautiful natural setting, include:

Mission House (1822) – New Zealand’s oldest standing building, built by the Rev John Butler; and the Clarke family from 1824–31 and finally by the Kemp family and their descendents until 1974.

Stone Store (1836) -- The oldest-standing European stone building in NZ.

Steamship Elisa Hobson – Beautiful little steam vessel takes visitors out on the Inlet

Rewa’s Village – Just across the river. Built of materials used before the coming of the missionaries and is a faithful reconstruction of a Maori Fishing village, typical of the times of Chiefs Hongi Hika and Rewa.

Rainbow Falls: Majestic 27m high waterfalls, linked by a superb walk to the Kororipo Basin.

Puketi Forest: Marvel at the ancient Kauri trees, second only in size to the giant Redwoods of California. An easy 15 minute walk.

Chris Booth Sculpture: “Te Whiringa oa Manoko” symbolizes the ‘interweaving of Cultures in Kerikeri’ by the acclaimed sculptor, Chris Booth, 11m high in the Domain Park.

Pete’s Pioneer & Transport Museum: A great museum filled with vintage and classic cars, pioneer history and heritage items.

Parrot Place: Take a parrot safari through glorious subtropical gardens and be entertained by the antics of the huge variety of native and exotic parrots.

And, thereafter, you can spend time in the huge range of boutique and specialist shops available in Kerikeri.
From the hand-made, mouth watering, chocolates of Makana Confections to the locally made Kauri products, some 50,000 years old, of Kauri Workshop and Interiors Dundee.

And from fantastic fashion shops of the High Street to the fabulous woodcraft, stained glass, silver jewellery, textiles & bookbinding of the Origin Art and Craft Co-operative.
